Inter and Milan offered new hope for San Siro

While Milan and Inter press ahead with plans to build new stadiums, the local council has new hope that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza – known as San Siro – can be restructured instead.

The clubs waited for years to get approval to essentially build a new joint arena in the car park of the current stadium, which would then see the existing structure knocked down afterwards, but were blocked by local and national authorities.

Instead, they announced projects to build their own individual stadiums outside the city, specifically in Rozzano and San Donato, though these too are not without their problems.

Now Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala has a new ally in his attempt to keep the clubs at ‘home’ by restructuring the Stadio Meazza with help from company Webuild.

They have written an open letter to Mayor Sala, the council, the clubs and the company M-I Stadio, which effectively runs the Stadio Meazza on behalf of the teams.

Webuild CEO Pietro Salini writes that San Siro is “an iconic structure of the city of Milan, with symbolic value for the entire football world. Webuild manifest their availability to collaborate in identifying how to functionally regenerate the stadium.”

The plans would involve improving access and hospitality, a general structural assessment of the stadium, improvement of the security issues and bringing the technology up to date.

Most importantly, as this is a problem Inter and Milan are concerned about, they insist it would continue to allow the stadium to host matches as well as the upcoming Milano-Cortina 2026 games.

This all still requires the Government to remove the ban on doing any structural work on the stadium, which was imposed by treating San Siro with the same laws as a building of architectural interest.
